Crew welfare

Crew welfare is a very important issue in the success of a shipping company as a happy crew and a good and open atmosphere on board is essential in maintaining a strong operational and safety culture. Good food, a clean accommodation and a pleasant working and living environment are the essentials however mental health issues on board are sometimes underestimated or not signalized.

ISWAN (https://www.seafarerswelfare.org) is a non-profit organization sponsored by the shipping industry with the sole purpose to promote and support the welfare of seafarers all over the world. As well as operating a 24-hour helpline as a direct service for seafarers, we also run a number of other projects and campaigns in support of seafarers’ welfare.

Mr. Renato ‘Jun’ Pablo Jr. ISWAN Regional Director, Philippines and South East Asia did give a workshop on mental health issues on board ships highlighting the influence of social media, understanding and overcoming cultural differences and dealing with stress and bad news from home. We really thank Jun Pablo for his lively presentation and the way he engaged his audience.

CIMA milestone for 2020 After the lunchbreak and praying time the program was continued with a brief presentation from Chairman of CIMA, Mr. Gatot Cahyo, who explained whole activities of what CIMA had been doing over the past year. All were very positive since all of them were being contributed for the goods of the Indonesian seafarers. The members were being given the opportunity to share their feedback and suggestion how we are going to do differently in 2020 as part of the milestone. We were learning a lot from each other while having a real great time during the annual meeting.
